A franking machine is a device that allows businesses to print pre-paid postage directly onto envelopes, labels, or other mail pieces.  The franking machine works by using a digital scale to weigh the mail and calculate the correct postage amount, which is printed onto the letter using a built-in printer.

Franking machines can only be leased or purchased from an authorised supplier. Postage is a form of currency that is regulated much like the printing of money.

Mailmark is the new generation of franking mark with a 2D barcode which carries machine readable information on both the user and mail piece.  From January 1st, 2023, Royal Mail no longer accepts the use of non-Mailmark franking machines, which use the traditional town and crown mark. The reason for Royal Mail’s decertification of non Mailmark franking machines is because Mailmark is the most efficient way of processing mail.
